👵👴 Dear Mom & Dad 4: Language accessibility is SO important

Dear friend,

Sending you lots of love & a big virtual hug. 🫂

There’s a lot going on in the world right now so it’s ok if you’re feeling drained, need extra time, cancel meetings, sleep in, call friends/family, etc.

Please take care of yourself. ❤️

My heart is going out to all the families being separated right now. 😢

1. 🕹🤯 Language Accessibility Is SO Important

Remember the Ring Fit Adventure workout game I mentioned two weeks ago that I bought for my parents?

Well, my parents played everyday for a while, and then they suddenly stopped play. I found out that it's because they kept getting stuck on some harder levels.

Why? Because the English instructions/narrations were going too fast for them to understand. They started ignoring the instructions and were just trying random actions. No wonder they kept getting stuck.

I wish I had known this at the beginning, but it turns out, you can change the Language of your Nintendo Switch and the game changes languages too! 🤯

Here are the instructions.

They're available in English, French, German, Spanish, Italian, Dutch, Portuguese, Russian, Japanese, Traditional Chinese, Simplified Chinese, and Korean.

Everything in the game is now Chinese for them, including all the words displayed as well as the narration. It's a complete game-changer (hah), because now my parents don't have to struggle to follow along.

Reflection: Can you imagine playing a game or using any form of technology in a language that you only have minimal fluency in?

2. 💬 Question of the Week (in 7 languages)

English:
What is the scariest thing that has ever happened to you?

Simplified Chinese:
你经历过最可怕的事情是什么?
Nǐ jīnglìguò zuì kěpà de shìqing shì shénme?

Traditional Chinese:
你經歷過最可怕的事情是什麼?
Nǐ jīnglìguò zuì kěpà de shìqing shì shénme?

Vietnamese:
Điều đáng sợ nhất đã từng xảy ra với ____ là gì?

Spanish:
¿Qué es lo más aterrador que le ha pasado? (Formal)
¿Qué es lo más aterrador que te ha pasado? (Informal)

Korean:
살면서 가장 무서웠던 일은 뭐였어요?
salmyeonseo gajang museowotdeon ireun mwoyeosseoyo?

Filipino/Tagalog:
Ano po ang pinaka-nakakatakot na nangyari sa inyo?

Please take care of yourself this weekend.

With love,
Joseph
